A Note from the Editor

This issue of the Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music features three very different articles. Michael R. Dodds provides an analysis of the contrapuntal theories of Werckmeister, who is often remembered only for his tuning temperaments; Brent Wissick provides an informed performer’s viewpoint on the cello sonatas of Bononcini, richly illustrated with video and audio recordings; and C. Jane Gosine presents a detailed look at the handwriting in the autograph manuscripts of Charpentier, contributing to the on-going work of establishing a chronology for this repertory. These articles are complemented by reviews of books, a critical edition of music, and a facsimile edition of a collection of sacred songs.

We encourage communications from readers about issues that our articles and reviews treat. Such communications are published in a subsequent issue of JSCM, with a note and link appended to the original article. The present issue has a postscript by Lois Rosow to volume 10, no. 1 (2004), devoted entirely to Lully’s Persée, and guest edited by Professor Rosow.

Proposals from authors for articles are always welcome at JSCM (see the Guidelines for Contributors). I call authors’ attention to the fact that we have a Style Sheet, which can be downloaded from the Guidelines page. A new page on our site, Supporting JSCM, encourages financial support from readers who find JSCM useful. We have no intention of charging any fee to read this journal, but its production is not without considerable expense.

Since my last “note,” there have been two changes in the team who make JSCM possible. We warmly thank Tim Carter, retiring from the Board, for all he has done for the Journal. Joining us is Georgia Cowart, the new President of the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music, an ex officio member of the Board. The full listing of the editorial team can be seen in the Masthead. Finally, I wish to thank Paul Arroyo and his staff at the University of Illinois Press for continued cooperative technical work in publishing JSCM with the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music.
