Submissions to JSCM

JSCM Guidelines for Contributors

  1. Authors should submit two copies of the primary materials for their articles
for consideration, one deleting all identification of the author. The anonymous copy of a submitted article will be sent out for double-blind review by scholars in the field for comment before the Editor-in-Chief makes a final decision about publication. Articles can be considered that are not yet in JSCM style. The initial submission should include the text in Microsoft Word format, along with musical examples, illustrations, and tables in one or more separate files. Audio and video examples will be requested later, but should be clearly indicated in the main text. Submissions should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief as email attachments:

    Lois Rosow
    Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music
    rosow.1@osu.edu

    Professor of Music, Emeritus
    Ohio State University
    Columbus OH 43210-1170, U.S.A.

  2. JSCM publishes articles in English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian. Articles not in English should be accompanied by a summary in English.
  3. Authors are encouraged to divide their articles into titled sections. Paragraphs should not be numbered; this will be done during the editing process.
  4. Because space is not an issue in web publication, authors are encouraged to include additional reference material, such as complete texts of archival documents, glossaries, biographical notes, etc., as appendices. Appendices should be submitted as separate Word documents and referred to in the main text; they should be provided with captions.
  5. After articles are accepted, authors will be asked to provide written permissions to publish copyrighted materials for figures and examples, to sign a consent form assigning copyright of the article to the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music, and to provide a 75–100-word RILM abstract. For information on how to write a RILM abstract, click here. As explained on the consent form, in addition to the right to republish their articles (with citation of the original publication), authors are granted the right to pre-publish either the edited abstract or the edited introductory chapter on a personal, institutional, or corporate web page; forthcoming publication in JSCM must be cited.
  6. Authors receive no payment from the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music for their contributions; nor are they charged any publication fees.
  7. It is the author’s responsibility to revise accepted articles to conform with the JSCM Style Sheet. To download the current version of the JSCM Style Sheet in pdf format, click here. To see the list of library abbrevations used in JSCM, click here.
  8. Continuous-tone and line illustrations are called “figures” in JSCM. Color illustrations are welcome. For technical requirements see the JSCM Style Sheet, Section 7.
  9. Musical examples may be notated in formats such as Sibelius or Finale. They should be submitted in pdf format.
  10. Audio and video examples should be essential to the article’s argument. They will be published in mp3 (audio) or mp4 (video) format. For copyrighted audio and video materials, JSCM subscribes to the interpretation of “fair use” summarized in “Society for Cinema and Media Studies’ Statement of Fair Use Best Practices for Media Studies Publishing,” Cinema Journal 49:4 (summer 2010): 179–85. In brief, short excerpts that advance a scholarly argument are generally permitted.
  11. Captions for all examples and figures should be written in one or more Word files (not, for example, as a heading in a Sibelius file).
