The Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music

Positioning the references: References may appear either at the right-hand side or at the foot of the screen. Readers can change the position of the references by changing the width of the window. To change the width, either drag the edge of the window or adjust the magnification (Ctrl+ or Ctrl- on PC, Cmd+ or Cmd- on Macintosh).

Reading the references: Use the note numerals to move back and forth between the main text and the references. The links work in both directions. The linked object will move to the top of its frame.

Opening linked files: In recent issues of JSCM, most examples, figures, and tables, along with their captions, open as overlays, covering the text until they are closed. Nevertheless, readers have choices. In most browsers, by right-clicking the hyperlink (PC or Macintosh) or control-clicking it (Macintosh), you can access a menu that will give you the option of opening the linked file (without its caption) in a new tab, or even in a new window that can be resized and moved at will.

Printing JSCM articles: Use the “print” link on the page or your browser’s print function to open a print dialog for the main text and endnotes. To print a linked file (e.g., an example or figure), either use the “print” command on the overlay or open the item in a new tab (see above).

Items appearing in JSCM may be saved and stored in electronic or paper form and may be shared among individuals for all non-commercial purposes. A Note from the Editor

The articles in this issue of the Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music have musical analysis at their core, specifically, the ways in which the close study of seventeenth-century music might shed new light on two very different sorts of problems in two very different repertories. One author uses musical and character analysis to examine the degree to which singer-actors influenced both the casting and the composition of the roles they premiered in Lully’s operas. The other explores the harmonic language of motets composed for the court of Emperor Ferdinand III as a means to understand musical expressivity more broadly in the seventeenth century. In both cases the online format of JSCM allows readers to see and listen to selected musical examples as they read the articles, continuing a tradition established in the very first issue of JSCM over twenty years ago. Readers may also notice that in volume 21, score examples and the accompanying audio excerpts appear on a combined overlay, playable with just a single click. Along with these two lengthy articles the reader will find seven reviews of recent books on seventeenth-century topics ranging from music and musical thought in Italy, England, and Bohemia to broader performance practice issues.

This is my last issue as Editor-in-Chief of JSCM, and so I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to my predecessor, Bruce Gustafson, who has been my constant source of information and advice. I would also like to thank incoming Editor-in-Chief Lois Rosow, in whose more-than-capable hands JSCM will continue to flourish in the years to come. I hope that Reviews Editor Beth Glixon and Editorial Assistants Mary Paquette-Abt and Kimberly Beck Hieb know just how much their work has meant to me and to the Society of Seventeenth-Century Music; I’ll take this opportunity one last time to thank them publicly.

As many readers will know, JSCM has undergone significant changes over the past six years, including a change in publisher and hosting server. We updated the look of the Journal during that time. We also made it a bit more mobile friendly. For many of these innovations, and for his ongoing technical support of JSCM, I’d like to thank Chris Borgmeyer of Crooked River Design.

According to the description on its home page, the Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music publishes “scholarly studies of the musical cultures of the seventeenth century. These include historical and archival studies, performance practice, music theory, aesthetics, dance, and theater.” I am very grateful to have been able to work with the authors whose scholarly contributions have allowed the Journal to fulfill this promise of geographical and methodological inclusiveness over the past six years.
