Roger | 10 Suittes de Clavessin Composées Par Mons[ieu]r Giacomo Frobergue (Amsterdam, [1698]). Three editions appeared. The first was published by Estienne Roger (exemplar in GB-Lbl, Roger 1). Then, probably in 1709, Pierre Mortier brought out a pirate print (Mortier), which is more handsomely engraved than Rogers but musically less interesting, due in part to the obvious copying errors; it adds to the title Mis en Meilleur ordre. et Corrigée[s] dun Grand nombre de Fautes. The exemplar in F-Pn has numbers for the suites added in manuscript. An immaculate exemplar in D-Sa came to light in Kiev in 1999 together with other Frobergeriana. After this Amsterdam war in music publishing had come to an end by Mortiers death, Roger brought out a Seconde Edition trez exactement corrigée (Roger 2, [1712?]). Regarding the recovery of the unique exemplar of this edition in PL-Kj, see my Frobergeriana (see Ref. 2) The story of the three Amsterdam editions was established by Rudolf Rasch, J.J. Froberger and the Netherlands in The Harpsichord and its Repertoire, Proceedings of the Harpsichord Symposium (Utrecht; STIMU, 1992), 121–41. In my opinion, only Roger 1 (otherwise referred to simply as Roger) has source value. A careful study of all the variants, leads inevitably to the conclusion that the corrections in both Mortier and Roger 2 are merely their own interventions. Facsimile ed. of the exemplar in F-Pn: Hill, vol. 4. |
